Rough Diamond
The Basement, Tuesday 21st February 2006

From fictitious chanteuse on Heartbreak High and starring roles in Wildside and The Secret Life of Us to real life singer, Abi Tucker's journey from teenage character Jodie Cooper to centre stage fronting an 11-piece band has seen a maturity develop in both her writing and performance.

Abi Tucker sings with a fragility of style in her Blues soaked Soul but with a confidence inviting comparisons to the likes of Martha Wainwright or Joni Mitchell; indeed, if there was a mid point between those two women, it would definitely be Abi Tucker. But don't get the wrong idea about Tucker live. This gal kicks the proverbial with a raw and edgy persona that's impossible to ignore, taking the listener on a journey through love and loss, heartbreak and joy, together with sharply noted observations of a world known and imagined.

Abi has been on her own journey with travels into the outback helping teach the children of indigenous communities to write and create their own performance pieces. And tho' she's no doubt been the 'star' for a time in the likes of Papunya, Alpurrurulam and Kintore, it's a label she refuses to wear, instead concentrating on her work with the local kids.

That said, her time outback has been invaluable to Abi Tucker's own writing. Stand by for this live preview before Tucker steps into the studio to record the aptly titled Rough Diamond, penned during Abi's time on the road and in the bush. With a big dose of Blues and Soul entwined with a healthy Folk sensibility, this richly-woven collection of songs highlights Tucker's trademark smoky voice and is tipped to put Abi on all the 'best new' lists of the year.
